After a very dry May, we finally got enough rain at the end of the first week of June to properly wet the soil. Before then, the few mm here and there did very little when the ground was so dry, and the wind was blowing the top dry very quickly.
We have plenty of transplanting to do now that ground conditions are good, starting with the rest of the squash. And we caught up with hand-weeding, much easier to do when there is some moisture in the soil.
We have started harvesting green onions, and they should bulk up nicely now. They change from spring onion size to large green onions to uncured bulb onions as the weeks go on.
Our new potatoes will benefit from the rain and should be big enough to harvest for our box scheme soon.
Our polytunnels and glasshouses are all planted up now with cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, chillies, parsley and basil and we’ve already harvested the first of the cucumbers and basil to sell at the Farmer’s Markets we attend.
And as we make progress with transplanting into the fields we are still seeding new plants into plug trays, so plenty more to come!
