Finally, at the start of March, we had a few consecutive dry and sunny days ! Most of this season’s vegetable ground has been ploughed now and manure spread on some areas.
The kale is putting on a last bit of growth before it starts to flower, and the spinach and chard is re-growing. Inside the polytunnels there are small amounts of salad leaves ready to harvest and in the woodland at Egerton, we’ve started to harvest the wild garlic.
We are still busy sowing leeks into trays whenever we have time, we grow a lot of leeks!
Martin had another visit to London this week, meeting at an urban growing site in Dagenham run by the innovative Growing Communites. The purpose of the visit was to provide more evidence of why DEFRA should set up a dedicated Market Garden Support Fund which could provide capital funding to small organic horticultural farms because of the benefits provided in terms of food production, local employment, environmental benefits and public engagement. Angela Eagle, Minister of state for DEFRA seemed keen to take the proposals forward.
