Hot, hot, very hot and too hot , the second heatwave of the year!! We startd at 6am all week to try and beat the heat and had heavy dew on the plants some mornings when harvesting, which was very helpful. And the thunder showers on the Tuesday and Friday night were much appreciated too, apart from everyone's lack of sleep!
And now it's July already? June is always a very busy month for us although I’m not sure that July will be any less busy! The cooler temperatures have been welcome this week but the ground is dry again with a hot, dry week ahead. We transplanted some cabbages, swede and leeks yesterday that have been ready to go for some time, just waiting for suitable conditions to work the ground. They now need irrigating using trickle tape, which took Martin a long time to set up, as the rooks had made lots of holes in the tape that was used just before the thunderstorm, clever enough to know that there was still some water inside the tape! We need to remember to put water out for them so they don’t need to destroy any more of it!
This is our second year of growing less area of vegetables than previously and this year we hope to make some hay from the herbal ley area, so a week of sun and dry weather is welcome for that job at least.
Our courgettes are in full production now, which usually means they need picking 3 times a week, although with the heat forcast for next week, we may well have to pick them more often!
