It’s been nice to have a few days when it feels like spring is in the air, but we’ve still had cold nights and there's more to come so our leafy greens are not regrowing yet. It's feeling like the 'hungry gap' far too early, altough we do still have leeks, kalettes, kale, purple sprouting and some salad leaves in the fields and polytunnels, as well as small amounts of beetroot, swede, parsnip and carrots. We also have squash, potatoes and onions in store.
The garlic and broad beans planted in the Autumn are looking good, and it won't be long before we're harvesting wild garlic.
We’ve started muck spreading and ploughing in the fields. Our 'muck' is composted horse manure from Chilham and Wye stables and adds some fertiity and organic matter to our fields but our main fertility comes from 2 years of grass/clover leys inbetween a year of vegetables.
We already have lots of trays of seedlings growing in the seeding glasshouse to look after and Martin planted a small area of early potatoes in February.
Here's a few pictures from the 'Riple Farm Watering Hole' from November to January, a bit quiet over the winter months, but getting busier again now!
