After a very dry February, we've had very few dry days in March and April and have only had a few days when we could work the ground and do some planting. So far we've made a small start on planting onion sets and transplanted some kale, chard, spinach and lettuce. And Martin has direct sown some salad, annual spinach, carrots and beetroot.
But we will have a lot of catching up to do once the ground is dry enough, as there's only a week left of April and the forcast is fairly unsettled for the week ahead. The rye/clover/vetch green manure crops are growing well and need mowing too.
We are entering the 'Hungry Gap' and just have leeks, carrots, PSB, a few cabbages and kalettes left in the field. Our kale is pretty much finished but the small amount of overwintered chard and spinach that survived the December sub zero temperatures is growing again. And we still have plenty of salad leaves in our polytunnels. Our stored onions are almost finished but we do still have some stored Crown Prince squash.
There are plenty of trays of baby plants to look after at the moment, although at least those that are hardening off outdoors don't need much watering! We will be sowing courgettes, squash and sweetcorn next.
