We’ve had very few cold starts so far this autumn and plenty of wet and mild days so it’s very wet out in the fields now and our waterproofs are getting plenty of use!! We’ve usually had to change to an 8am start time before the clocks change, due to frosty mornings, but we’re still starting at 7am this year. We just have to do a few shed jobs if it’s too dark to go straight out harvesting.
The leafy greens and salad leaves have been a joy to harvest and pack recently and still looking good now (end October). Bunching the rainbow chard has been a favourite job in the packing shed over recent weeks as it is so beautiful!
And the winter squashes are all delicious now, each with their own flavour and texture, it’s hard to decide which one to cook. The Red Kuri is a very versatile squash, and the skin softens when cooked and is is edible, so very easy to prepare, just wash the skin well first.
Just remembering to share this lovely short film about the work that Nicole, Turtle Dove advisor with the RSPB made, showing what some local landowners are doing to help Turtle Doves.
