Our main job in the fields at the moment is harvesting large amounts of leeks and kale, as well as smaller amounts of cabbages, kalettes, spinach, chard, salad leaves, swede and parsley. This work gets slower as the fields are so wet underfoot and the leafy crops suffer some weather damage. Needless to say that when our worker was harvesting leeks in heavy rain brought by Storm Chandra early February, he didn’t see many of the usual dog walkers and runners go past!
The seed potatoes have arrived along with another delivery of various vegetable seeds and lots of bags of peat free tray compost. This time of year sees us spending a lot of time harvesting and peeling leeks as well as sowing the next season’s leek crop into plug trays!
We will be having some hedge cutting done sometime in February leaving plenty of time for the birds to feast on any hedgerow fruits but cutting before nesting season begins. We removed more of the tree guards from the hedge we planted in 2021/22 as they have done their job. There are still some on, which are made from a compostable plastic, we are not sure how well they will compost/biodegrade so have removed most of these anyway.
When the fields dry up we will be busy working the ground ready for the new season’s crops. Thanks for buying our organic veggies and for your interest in what we do.
