Our leeks and carrots are now finished, and we have very few potatoes left. We do still have some Crown Prince squash in store though, it kept very well after plenty of sun when growing.
We are now harvesting new season’s kale, spinach, green garlic, parsley and lettuce and will be transplanting courgettes into the fields soon. We had hardly any rain in April and just a few mm so far in May (as of 11/5) so we are having to irrigate anything we plant out.
We have planted tomatoes, basil and cucumbers in our polytunnels and have several hundred trays of baby plants to water. Hopefully we can plant some of them out soon.
The first returning Turtle Doves were heard in Kent at the end of April, so it’s time to start supplementary feeding them. Although we’ve not had any resident birds the last few years we are hopeful they will return to our fields in Crundale and will be scattering the seed supplied by the RSPB weekly again this year.
As well as David Attenborough turning 100, another notable birthday is the Soil Association turning 80!
The Soil Association charity is celebrating their 80th birthday! From 3rd May throughout the rest of 2026, the charity will be showcasing 80 influential voices from across the sector, starting with Soil Association CEO Helen Browning, to innovative organic farmers and wholesalers.
You can watch a new video from Soil Association, and stay tuned across social media to keep up with their birthday celebrations.
